#1 To Remain in the Heart: Learn Japanese

There was a falconer and hunter, named Sonjō, who lived in the district called Tamura-no-Gō, of the province of Mutsu.

Japanese Translation
ソンジョウという名前の猟師が、ムツの国のタムラノゴウという地域に住んでいた。

One day he went out hunting, and could not find any game.

ある日、彼は狩りに出かけたが、獲物が見つからなかった。

But on his way home, at a place called Akanuma, he perceived a pair of oshidori (mandarin-ducks), swimming together in a river that he was about to cross.

しかし、かえり道、アカヌマという場所で、猟師はオシドリのペアに気づいた。彼が渡ろうとした川で、オシドリが泳いでいる。

To kill oshidori is not good; but Sonjō happened to be very hungry, and he shot at the pair.

オシドリを殺すのは良くないことだ。しかし、ソンジョウはたまたま空腹だった。
彼はオシドリのペアめがけて撃った。

His arrow pierced the male: the female escaped into the rushes of the further shore, and disappeared.

彼の矢はオシドリのオスをさした。オシドリのメスは対岸のイグサのなかに逃げ込んだ。

Sonjō took the dead bird home, and cooked it.

ソンジョウは死んだトリを持ち帰り、それを料理した。

That night he dreamed a dreary dream.

その夜、彼はかなしい夢を見た。

It seemed to him that a beautiful woman came into his room, and stood by his pillow, and began to weep.

美しい女性が部屋に来て、彼の枕元に立ち、泣き始めた。

So bitterly did she weep that Sonjō felt as if his heart were being torn out while he listened.

彼女はひどく嘆き悲しんだ。それを聞いたソンジョウが、自分の心臓が引き裂かれるような感じがするくらい。

And the woman cried to him: “Why,—oh! why did you kill him?—of what wrong was he guilty?… At Akanuma we were so happy together,—and you killed him!… What harm did he ever do you? Do you even know what you have done?—oh! do you know what a cruel, what a wicked thing you have done?… Me too you have killed,—for I will not live without my husband!… Only to tell you this I came.”… 

女性は彼に叫んだ。
「どうして、どうして彼を殺した？彼が悪かったのか？
アカヌマで、幸せだったのに、お前が彼を殺した！
彼がお前に何をした？お前は自分がしたことをわかっているのか？自分がどれほど残酷で、邪悪な事をしたのか。
お前は私も殺したんだ。夫がいなければ、私は生きないのだから。
お前にこれを伝えるためだけに、私はやってきた」

Then again she wept aloud,—so bitterly that the voice of her crying pierced into the marrow of the listener’s bones;—and she sobbed out the words of this poem:—

そのあと、再び彼女は声をだして涙を流した。激しく、それを聞く者の骨の髄に突き刺さるくらい。
そして彼女はむせび泣きながら、この詩を言った。

Hi kururéba
Sasoëshi mono wo—
    Akanuma no
Makomo no kuré no
Hitori-né zo uki!
[“At the coming of twilight I invited him to return with me—! Now to sleep alone in the shadow of the rushes of Akanuma—ah! what misery unspeakable!”]

日暮れ時に、彼を誘って一緒に帰り、
今は、アカヌマのイグサの陰で一人で眠る。
ああ、つらくて言葉にできない！

And after having uttered these verses she exclaimed:—“Ah, you do not know—you cannot know what you have done! But to-morrow, when you go to Akanuma, you will see,—you will see…” So saying, and weeping very piteously, she went away.

この詩を言った後、彼女は叫んだ。
「お前は知らない。自分が何をしたのかを！
しかし明日、アカヌマへ行けば、わかる。わかるだろう」
そう言って、悲しそうに涙を流して、彼女は帰った。

When Sonjō awoke in the morning, this dream remained so vivid in his mind that he was greatly troubled.

ソンジョウが朝に目覚めると、この夢はせんめいに心に残っていた。苦悩するほどハッキリと。

What does this word mean?
"こころにのこる" is a Japanese phrase meaning "to remain in the heart" or "to be emotionally memorable." It refers to experiences, words, or moments that leave a lasting impression on someone’s emotions or thoughts. Often used in poetic or reflective contexts, it conveys deep emotional resonance.

He remembered the words:—“But to-morrow, when you go to Akanuma, you will see,—you will see.”

彼はこの言葉を覚えていた。「明日、アカヌマへ行けば、わかるだろう」

And he resolved to go there at once, that he might learn whether his dream was anything more than a dream.

彼はすぐに向かおうと決意した。自分の夢がただの夢かどうかわかるかもしれない。

So he went to Akanuma; and there, when he came to the river-bank, he saw the female oshidori swimming alone.

彼はアカヌマへ行った。
そしてそこで、川岸に着いたとき、メスのオシドリが一匹で泳いでいるのが見えた。

In the same moment the bird perceived Sonjō; but, instead of trying to escape, she swam straight towards him, looking at him the while in a strange fixed way.

同時に、そのオシドリがソンジョウに気づいた。
しかし、逃げようとせずに、彼女はソンジョウの方へまっすぐ泳いだ。彼をじっと見つめながら。

Then, with her beak, she suddenly tore open her own body, and died before the hunter’s eyes…

そのあと、くちばしを使って、彼女は自分の身体を引き裂いて、ソンジョウの目の前で死んだ。

Sonjō shaved his head, and became a priest.

ソンジョウは頭を剃って、僧侶になった。
